Hi Andrew,
A discone is a bit of a compromise aerial, wide-band yes, but it misses
some bits in the middle,
usually the bits you want.
My scanners run off a 5/8 wave ES-A band aerial I bought from Hi-Tec
Aerials and I built a 1/4 wave ground plane
out of a 50 x 25mm block of aluminium and tapped some radials made out
of 6mm alloy into it,
it's up about 8m in the air on a mast I made and I can "hear" all the
Fire stuff I need to.
I mucked around with various splitters and what have you, last year I
bought a Stridsberg 4-way multi-coupler from
the US, the difference in reception was like night and day, I can't
recommend this thing enough.
I'm not a part of Hi-Tec Aerials, but I have had great service from them
and they will make up any sort of coaxial
leads or supply you with connectors or cable.
I'm not calling anyone stupid here, but dealing with signals this small,
your co-ax and your connectors are the
difference between just OK reception and good reception.

Mike T.
