The “proper website” comment is very accurate, and an informed one.
Websites can reach every computer/mobility device user, while Facebook only reaches those who have not made a moral/other decision to refuse to touch it.
Some of us refuse it, because of all the harm with data breaches, interfering with election outcomes, and discrimination led killings it has caused/assisted, around the world.
If you are a business/organisation that has an informative website, you are ready 24/4 to inform all potential customers.
If you refuse to create and maintain a proper website, and just have a Facebook presence, you will only reach some, and piss off some others like me, especially with a nag screen that says you have to login or join to see more content.
Is that good marketing?

"Proper website" comment is misinformed.
Facebook has a large critical mass of people on it. Many people use it, so when you can then easily integrate connecting with your fan base / customer base via something that already exists on their devices, why wouldn't you?
Not that i'm a huge fan of Facebook but I recognise what it's good at.
Websites are just one tool, Facebook is very much another. They have different places on the shelf.
As do mailing lists, which I still think have merit.

Ill agree with others re farcebook. I myself don't go anywhere near it even though it seems to have become the defacto go to - even for rather large companies who have more than enough cash to stump up for a proper website. Sad really.

I was thinking more along the lines of keeping everything as it is and adding a facebook group to it as well

One thing I was thinking about was shouldn't we by now have a facebook
group preferably set to private or hidden for only the members of the
list and not every tom dick or harry for having open and meaningful
discussions and sharing of files ect cet
