I recently travelled from greymouth to christchurch with kiwirail. Was able to listen the whole way with the freqs listed on the national rail page. You will notice little post on the side of the rail stating 'radio channel 3' etc and which means need to change accordingly ,some even have the old signs with the actual freqs. I noticed the train staff each had radios to talk to each other about food/drink/rubbish but didnt bother finding that freq.
Just be careful as scanners are not permitted on the ticket terms on conditions surprisingly if anyone going to do the same.
Riche

Just curious, has the Railway channels / Kiwirail network gone digital .

The Frequency 152.05000 seems to have digital data noise on, but I can kinda hear audio in the background.
I live in Sandringham, and have a Discone up - could it be that I am just getting hammered by Sky Tower interference ??

Thanks in advance :)

Hello,

Just curious, I used to have one, but not sure if I still do.
Could I please request an account to edit the wiki page?

National Train Control channels remain Analogue.

Most shunting portables were recently replaced with Tait TP9300's and re programmed (Digital ready but still running Analogue)

Depending on the sensitivity of your receiver, it's front end may be getting overloaded but the signals of Sky Tower.

Cheers

Brendan

Have you also tried Ch 6, 7 & 8 rather than Ch 3?

Hi Chris,

Kiwirail have an extensive E band *analog**ue* narrow FM network all
around the Auckland area.

The best places to look are:

151.950 plus and minus 50 KHz in 12.5 KHz steps

152.050 plus and minus 50 KHz in 12.5 KHz steps.

152.350 plus and minus 50 KHz in 12.5 KHz steps.

and 153.45625 Simplex. The simplex channel is commonly used by track
gangs doing repairs and in rail yards.

They also use CTCSS on the channels to keep the nasty crud from Skytower
out. The popular tone are 173.8 Hz and 225.7 Hz
