The model is the Motorola APX 6000XE. They use predominantly UHF but there's
a dual-band unit on each fire truck to provide access to VHF for liaising
with other agencies and with brigades that still use VHF (mostly rural).

I don't know what the frequencies are yet, it might need someone to get hold
of one and do some fiddling with a close-call scanner.

Could you by chance remember the model number?

I saw in RSM database that
Auckland/Dunedin/Rotorua/Selwyn/Tauranga/Wellington had a group of 16 F band
simplex channels that were analog only and looked to have been licenced mid
2016.

I ask because as far as I knew Ambo are using P25 Taits up in the 500 band
in some areas and there was mention in the news article about fire being
able to communicate with other EMS.

Perhaps radio model doesn't really matter if they are sticking to analog
channels, but with a lot of stuff moving in the digital direction I kind of
assumed the new fire channels would be in line with that.

I believe that the fireground channels (generally simplex) are analogue. At
least i've not heard anything to suggest they're digital.

I have used the new radios during training, they're very nice. The noise
cancelling technology in the microphones is really impressive, but for
someone who's been using radio for years it's counter-intuitive to start
with (you need to talk directly into the mic, as opposed to 'across' it...
if you talk across it, you won't be heard).

Bit of a shame Tait didn't get the contract, however you can almost bet
these will be DMR channels and afaik there's only a couple of scanners and
certain HT's capable of receiving these channels otherwise you are stuck
with a PC for decoding.

Has the Fire Service setup a new set of channels that are the same
nationwide like Kiwirail have? (Im not sure on what they currently have as
its not really an area of interest)
