[TheList] Question from the Village idiot

Hi Mike,

Well I don't really agree with some of what you said.

I did mention buying a DVB-S2 receiver, they are not Freeview compliant and
I don't know why anyone would limit themselves to what freeview offers.

The Australian channels are SBS 1 and 2 and HD and Channel Nine HD and a
couple of lesser channels.

However in saying that, I have just cooked myself a really nice meal ,
Javanese curried pork strips - bottle of Sav Blanc, -(wife is away so I can
indulge myself!) and watched a bit of TV. Mostly on TVNZ7 I must admit and I
am very concerned that it is to be turned off some time in the future.

I watched bits of - TV1 News, Jamie Olivier 30minute meals, 400 years of
Telescopes, Country Calendar and we have several episodes of Grand designs,
Midsommer Murders, Sea Patrol, etc yet to watch. We look through the prog
guide once a week or so then when we want to watch something check the
playlist and go. TVNZ 7 has had some of the most amazing science docos but
they are not at peak times which is when they put on the likes of Talk Talk
and other boring stuff..

I must admit, a DTT STB with a hard drive is really the way to go (
satellite if you don't have Freeview HD) . We don't watch any live TV and
fast forward all the ads. There is so much good TV out there and it really
annoys me that people say there is nothing on Freeview and they have to have
SKY.

There that's my hobby horse...

SKY has a place if you really like sports but other than that it is a big
rip off..( mind you in saying that I have just spent the last 20 years
installing and maintaining their transmitters!. And switched them off a
while back.)

Hey Dennis,
Good info there, mate.
Although, if I was going to spend real money doing this I'd not bother
buying a Free-view "compliant" decoder, because when you do, you are pretty
much locked into the channels that Free-view has to offer.
Which to be honest doesn't really have a great deal to offer, unless you
like repeats and boring media-based things like "Talk Talk" on TVNZ7 and the
kiddies channel that used to be TVNZ 6, now called U.
At least with a decent sized dish and decoder, you can have signals from all
over the place, not just what Free-view says you should have.
