things, the first is that Software Defined Radios (in this case the <a
href="http://www.ettus.com/products">USRP</a> and the <a
href="http://sedition.org.au/op25/wiki">OP25</a> project) are now being
harnessed to monitor (and one day build) P25 systems. The second is that Amateur
radio operators are embracing this technology overseas and efforts are being
made to “re-band” commercial radio equipment to create P25 networks
for Amateur use.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

able to monitor police voice traffic the way we used to, that window seems to
be rapidly closing for the general public at large. Monitoring traffic and
traffic analysis (who’s talking to whom or who’s talking the most
and their location) may well be possible with some of these tools. Add to that
the probable migration of other first responders who may not utilize encryption
to the new radio network in the future (fire and ambo) suggests that over time
these new tools may become more valuable.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
