Line of sight can be pretty good. I'm in Foxton and sometimes we can talk to Foxton Beach if in the right locations.

Forgot to say the yellow shell one is dual band. These are used mainly for comms with rescue helo (ch 10) or can be used during incidents where other aerial operations are in use.
