[TheList] Ambulance channels

Hi everyone

I'm curious about ambulance channels.
Obviously ambos don't have a huge list of frequencies unlike fire and
police.

I hear ambos talk about radio channels for areas such as 68 and 76.
What is the theory behind the naming of the channel numbers? 76 is Dunedin
and 68 is around Geraldine area. Does each repeater have a so called
channel number in their radios which have the correct frequency and CTCSS
tone?

What CTCSS tones do they use? Is it all 218.1 nation wide or is that only
Canterbury?
