Buddy of mine went to coms with his brigade one day, he asked and they said
when 2 dispatchers are on duty they’ll talk on only their channels only ie,
FireNelson, FireCHCH and Timaru2 or FireDunedin and FireINV. The reason
you’ll sometimes hear all South Island turnouts is when there is only 1
dispatcher on duty they talk across all 5 channels. They said so that
brigades know they’re not ignoring them they’re just talking to someone
else in a different place.

This would explain why you’d hear Firecom but not the return transmission
from the truck unless they were talking on the same channel or group unless
they patch them together.
