They are still using Kiwirail's E-band network for some communications but
I believe they have digital radios onboard as well, although I don't know
what system.
The traffic on E-band seems to be mainly advisory in nature - speed
restrictions, drivers advising TC of hazards/people on or near the tracks,
requesting a light (signal) for right of way especially for entering or
leaving the yards, requesting permission to reset and continue after an
overspeed condition and so on.
