ADSL or Fibre ?

I have vodafone ADSL at home and used a cisco router/modem, now using as ASUS one.

Mum has using a cheap and nasty free one for her VF ADSL but now using a vodafone one. Don't think it really matters with adsl, a modem is a modem is a modem.

We are on their phone and broad band system and my first question is 
Do we NEED to use the Vodafone modem ??
Their modem doesn't let me air print?
I did air printing with the old system???
