My thought is Wouxun  <http://www.mtcradio.com/search.php?search_query=UV8D&x=53&y=6> KG-UV8D is better because it has 999 memories

The Baofeng UV-5R is the best bang for buck if you only need 128 memories

A few years ago, about 5, there was a Wouxun handheld that was pretty good, cheap, bang for buck for receiving most bands and transmitting on a few (provided you were allowed to of course).

Is it still the pick of the bunch or has something knocked it off its perch?
