The BCD396T and BCD396XT are the US versions, where as the UBCD396T and UBCD396XT are for the Australia and New Zealand markets.

The XT models are newer than the T. From a software viewpoint, the XT supports all of the functionality of the T model and has some extra features too. Any software for the XT should handle the T too, and any software specifically for the T will be able to access most functionality and features of the XT. But, software is software - only testing will confirm this.
