[TheList] Fire calls last night in Canterbury

Yep - I stand corrected. I asked the despatcher last night.

I took over in charge at the large fire in West Melton and was certainly
never made aware of it, nor was it being announced on turnout of other
appliances, so twas never going to work.

I thought given some of the nutbags on the channel, the despatchers did a
good enough job without MIPS.

It wasn't hard to get through on the phone, which I did several times.

Yep. MIPS was called by the dispatcher at 22:10 hrs.

Personally, I would have done it about 5 hours earlier, but they did finally
get around to it.

Now, I love vollies. I truly do. They give up a heck of a lot to do the
job, and I appreciate it. I'm not paid staff, just a radio listener.

However. I really felt like strangling some of the country boys who seemed
to want to give their entire life stories on the channel when things were
going to hell. I don't think that any of them seemed to hear MIPS. Which
was only called once, and not followed up on, which was another mistake
IMHO. Things would have run a tiny bit better if they had told the
storytellers to keep it to a minimum.

So. Perhaps a couple of lessons to be learned. The channel was pretty much
out of control last night, being busier than any Guy Fawkes in recent
memory.

My thoughts: Call for MIPS early, and enforce it if necessary. And maybe
pop a memo in the post for training nights to all emphasising what it's all
about, and how it benefits YOU by having a clearer radio if you need help..

If anyone had gotten into trouble last night, I think they would have had
trouble getting through on the radio.

Just my 2c.

Oh, and shoutout to Steve Austin!

It was implemented for south Canty last night. It basically means turnouts,
stop messages and priorities only. Status msg are still transmitted via the
MSU as usual.
