[TheList] ISS Comms

This data below is a snip from the Amsat Weekly satellite report which can
probably be found at the AMSAT website.
As you can see there are quite a few amateur satellites up there that you
can participate with either just listening or actively transmitting to and
through. You do need a good antenna system though. There are 2 basic
types of sat repeaters, an FM 'bent pipe' type which is just like an earth
bound repeater or the linear transponder that will re transmit everything it
hears over a limited passband and is used for SSB transmissions.

See the link to the ISS crew schedules.

>>>>>> This report is organized into four (4) parts.
Part 1 (S1) - operational analog amateur satellites
Part 2 (S2) - operational digital amateur satellites
Part 3 (S3) - non - operational satellites

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4
Hz. The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
   timer on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the re-
peater on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
   the 10 minute timer.

Local time onboard the ISS is UTC so that should give a rough indication of
when they are awake.

The crew tend to get a lot of spare time on weekends so that is probably a
good time to listen.

You can sign up on the NASA website for an automatic 'Spot-the Station'
email which will alert you when the ISS will be visible. Most passes last
around 5 minutes.

I have successfully connected to the packet station on board the ISS..
Packet sent and packet received with welcome message, and sent than lost the
connection..

I was just running on a Diamond X-50 'white stick' antenna - so no fancy
tracking..
And I was not taking into the Doppler shift so if I had done that I might
have been on for longer.

>From what I understand most of the traffic is in Russian, and I guess you
need to check their 'sleep cycle' as well as a few other things.
Never heard the HAM channels active, but then again, never have sat on them
either to track it..

There are a few really nice websites that give you satellite location
monitoring,

I used one to get weather data from a weather sat one day - same antenna,

Just my discovery's - for what its worth...
