[TheList] Wiki Spam? - UPDATE

Ok All,

So I have spent some time this afternoon and have done the following:

* Locked the current wiki - www.radiowiki.org.nz<http://www.radiowiki.org.nz> - the evil spammers were still THRASHING it.

*         Created a new wiki - http://new.radiowiki.org.nz

* Implemented better anti spammer protection

* Migrated most of the old data

* Maintained page history wherever possible

Going forwards everyone who wants to edit pages will need to create a new account on the 'new' Wiki preferably the same username so that any previous stuff lines up. As before you will need to verify your email address.

Anyone who wants to help out, please spend some time going thru the old wiki and comparing it with the new one to see if there are any pages I have missed. I remember we had pages with Auckland motorway section numbers and stuff like that which I have not found / migrated and I expect there may be more stuff.

After 1 - 2 weeks once everything is across I will remove the old wiki and move 'new' into its place.

I am still open to the idea of merging with another site as I don't have as much time to do stuff like this anymore, but for the time being I still like the wiki format and it wasn't as hard to fix up as I first thought.

I am quietly please at the amount of regular updates some of you have been doing. Some regions had over 200 updates which was pretty impressive.

Cheers,

Chris Hoffmann

Hi All,

The Wiki has ingested 35GB+ of spam this month which has left it pretty sluggish to say the least!

I can either set up a new MediaWiki instance, tighten up its security then we can all move over any relevant material or we can pull the pin and just leave the mailing list.

If there is a few people willing to move the valid content across then I don't mind keeping her going.

Cheers,

Chris.

I can help with either or both - already admin several mailman mailing lists.

Synergies with ScanningTasmania should be investigated too.

I have spoken to Chris and he is happy to continue providing the
service but doesn't have time to babysit the wiki or the mailing list.

If anyone or preferably multiple people want to take on the mailing list and/or wiki admin rights let me know.

The mailing list admin deletes the odd spammer, rejects
spam posts that get caught due to the sender not being subscribed etc.
The wiki admin can reverse changes that people make either maliciously
or genuinely, take a bit of ownership of maintaining the categories
and possibly driving interest etc.

If no one wants to take on the admin rights they will continue to run
but things could/will get messy.

I think a few of you are wiki admins already, Tahii springs to mind?

Cheers
