What do trains use selcalls for?

In a nut shell, the selcals are between the locomotive and Train Control
which are in Wellington. If the locomotive driver wishes to contact train
control, then he selects the correct channel for the area he is operating
in, presses the Call button which sends a tone to Train Control and appears
on the Train Controllers computer screen as the locomotive number and train
ID. The train controller can then select which call he will answer by voice..

Same when Train Control wants the locomotive crew, they select the
locomotive number/train ID and send the selcal which brings up a audio alert
in the locomotive for the driver to make a voice reply to.

Not sure if selcal based but the locomotive radio system also has a
emergency function as well, can be operated manually by the driver or
operates automatically under certain conditions which also sends a tone
across all the channels to Train Control which brings up a very loud audio
and visual displayed message on the controllers computer screen which has to
be answered without delay.
