SMACS is sort of the basic Police version of the fire service push button K code transmitters. They have a panic button among others. Sometimes they transmit the status tone continually . . .

I am led to beleive the rest of the Auckland area has switched over to digital.
 
That would explain why those channels are now linked.

Just turned on my scanner today and it seems some of the old auckland police channals 
have been linked to whangerai or far north channels
