[TheList] Apco P25 digital network

Unfortunately we can't scan the new network :-(
I've managed to have a chat to someone recently, so have a bit of info on
this as follows..

Fulltime encryption is being employed, similar to with nz customs service
tait 9100 IS series base (?9155) and portable (9155) radios, and have dual
analogue/digital capability if needed.

http://www.taitworld.com/main/index.cfm/1,78,0,46,html/APCO-P25-Digital

When the network is rolled out to the rest of the country (by 2014),
fulltime encryption will be utilised.

Uniden have portable and base set scanners that are apco P25 digital
capable. However, when encryption is layered over/incorporated in the
digital signal you're screwed. All you hear is garbled speech and see a
lovely "ENC" icon indicating frequency encryption. OTAR (over the air
re-keying) is also more than likely being used for lost/stolen tait radios,
which essentially means that they can shut them down/update new encryption
keys.

The old analogue VHF 75/76mhz channels are being linked to other regions
channels to allow usage/back up channels if/when required as the roll out
continues. Also for continued use by rural fire. Police will need to keep
running with dual antennas for "a" band and "e" band.

DSE initially stocked the new digital base scanner for about $800. Then
mysteriously put the price up to $1200 close to roll out of new network
dates... Not even sure if they stock it at all now? A really dumb move by
DSE (or maybe Uniden raising RRP). Who really wants to pay that sort of
money for a digital unit with limited functionality?

Fire and Ambo will flick to this network in the future. Prob not fulltime
encrypted, but may have the software/functionality to encrypt as required.
The NZ Govt is following the international trend to use apco P25 as the
standard for network interoperability between services (including MAF,
customs, civil defence, and the cloak and dagger guys)

The police have finally caught up with technology, which will mean them
catching up with the many retards who have been using scanners for years for
illicit purposes. Life will be very (did I mention VERY?) hard now for
them!!

A real shame for the scanner hobbyist though :-(

RIP the "a" band network, it was lots of fun while it lasted :-)

It's owner has been AWOL for 12 months, the switch got flicked.

We are open to proposals from people who want to build and run a forum.

Cheers

Ok, can someone email me with what happened to NZS? The wiki kicks ass
and we still have chat but can we have a forum too? or did I miss that?

You can't, as long as encryption is on (which it reportedly is), you can't
listen.

If encryption isn't on, try a Uniden UBCD396T or UBCD996T.

Short answer...

You can't..

A lot of work has been undertaken to ensure the police
communications are secure...and as the others go on board
our
listening pleasure will decline more so...

It is very quiet with the wellington police but now I am picking up
Palmy Wanganui and Gisborne/Napier on the local channels that I have
never heard before.
